IPS426 Short Throw Shifter 1992-2010 Vipers

(3 customer reviews)

The IPSCO Short Throw Shifter (STS), is designed to reduce the distance your hand needs to move to engage the next gear, thus reducing the amount of time spent shifting, reducing wasted time between shifts, and resulting in improved performance. We have decreased throw by reducing the angle that the shifter shaft travels through during its stroke between gears. IPSCO’s design changes the pivot point geometry of the short shifter from the stock factory shifter to reduce the distance that the upper section must travel to achieve the same degree of movement in the lower section where the shift rod engages. This ensures that although your hand is moving a shorter distance, the transmission is still fully engaged in every gear, and is carefully designed to create the optimal throw length, angular shift throw, and shift knob height. The design also includes springs to help users accurately move from gate to gate, to help prevent missed shifts and over revving of the engine on down shifts. The end result is a shorter, precise shift, which requires a shorter hand movement to engage the next gear, and looks and feels sportier.

Description

Short Throw Shifter (STS) by IPSCO for Dodge Vipers 1992-2010

Short Throw Shifter 101:

The distance that the shifter has to move between gears is known as throw. A short throw shifter is designed to increase the speed of the shift by making the distance traveled shorter and by making the mechanical aspects of the shift smooth and effortless. A common misconception is that a short shifter is just a chopped off version of the stock shifter. In fact, chopping your shifter has no effect on the angle that your shifter shaft travels through between gears and therefore does not reduce the shifter’s angular throw.

    IPSCO short throw shiftter review
A quick review for any Gen II owners thinking about getting the IPSCO STS ……….DO IT !!!!! Money well spent. The shifting on my GTS was a pain in the ass, to the point it was taking away the joy of driving it. It’s hard to have fun when your constantly thinking about weather or not your next shift is gonna go where you want it to. Then when it does happen, beating your self thinking was it me ? Did i have the correct grip for the gear change I wanted ? Well after changing engine mounts , transmission mounts (all poly) which helped , but did not stop it. I had enough and gave Mark at IPSCO a call and ordered one of his STS last week. Now before you start thinking it must be operator error. Let me say I’ve been driving standard shift vehicles for 21 years. After driving my daily driver manual 6 speed, cable shifted FWD 135 miles a day back N forth to work. It made shifting the viper less tolerable. Well it’s fixed now and I don’t have the anxiety when shifting.

I agree! Thought it was just me. Added the IPSCO STS this year and my shifts went from sloppy to accurate and solid. Not missed a shift since adding it, and without hoping I remembered where I positioned my hand for each shift. They just snap into gear! The best upgrade I’ve made for driving pleasure.

OEM shifter vs IPSCO short throw shifter. Visually there’s absolutely no comparison. IPSCO’s STS is overbuilt with every component machined from a solid chunk of billet 6061 aluminum. Plus it’s made right here in the good ole USA, which means a lot to me. This will provide a much more precise, crisp gear engagement and of course a shorter throw between gear selections. I also selected to replace the shift lever isolator with an unit that lowers the shift knob two inches. The shifter cup on mine was worn enough that you could almost see through it and of course the Viper tax on this little part is unbelievable. Luckily it’s just a generic part for all T-56 transmissions so I was able to purchase it for considerably less by buying it through a Corvette vender ?
